Student Conduct and Disciplinary Procedure

Students are expected to behave in a professional manner during college hours, college is considered an extension of their employment and their conduct and attitude is to be of a similar standard. Students will also need to fulfil the requirements of the behavioural tool reflecting their conduct which will allow them to move towards registration as Veterinary Nurses on completion of the course requirements.

With this in mind students are also reminded that in some cases it may be necessary share information relating to employment and education with Clinical Coaches, Regional Managers, College Principal, Tutors and other relevant organisations. All information will be kept securely and not disclosed to any third parties.

Students are expected to adhere to the following:

  • Students are expected to achieve no less than 90% course attendance with under 85% causing the student to be automatically monitored. Under 80% attendance will be RAG rated as Red, put on four weekly reviews and non-compliance policy potentially initiated.
  • Students are expected to arrive at college no later than 10:00am.
  • Students who are unable to attend a lesson have to give at least one day’s notice to the Training Department stating why they cannot attend.
  • Students who are unable to attend a lesson due to sickness must alert the Training Department no later than 9am on the day of their lesson.
  • Students must behave in a way that is not disruptive to tutors and other students.
  • Students must adhere to submission deadlines for their written assignments and CSL deadlines and/or make tutors aware of any issues impacting on this.
  • Attendance at college is dependent on the student’s performance at their place of work. Should a student’s performance at work be below the required standard, as decided by their Regional Manager/ Practice Manager, students may be removed from the VN Diploma course by their Regional Manager/ Practice Manager.
  • Students who leave their current place of employment as an apprentice are still able to continue their course at Goddard Veterinary Nursing College as long as they find alternative employment.

In the first instance, the tutor will hold a disciplinary tutorial with the student to outline the problem and formulate an action plan against it happening again.

If the same problem re-occurs, the tutor will raise the matter with the Training Manager and notify the student’s Regional Manager/ Practice Manager. The student will then be asked to attend a meeting with the Training Manager and Regional Manager/ Practice Manager. The problem will be discussed again with the student and the student will have an opportunity to raise any evidence as to why the action plan could not be followed. If necessary, the action plan will be reviewed.

If the same problem occurs a third time the Regional Manager/ Practice Manager will be notified and the student will be withdrawn from the training scheme.

Regular review of actual performance against specific will highlight any under-performance issues. Individual apprentice under performance will be identified through RAG (red/amber/green) rating of key indicators of progress. The purpose of the review will be to identify any issues which are contributing to the under-performance and to identify solutions, which may include putting in additional support arrangements.

The ‘rated’ areas will include:

  • attendance at college and in their work placement
  • progress against deadlines for completion of academic and practical work
  • quality of completed academic and practical work
  • improvement and achievement in assessments
  • feedback on their achievements in the work place from their employers.

Any under-performance in training which is identified will be discussed in monthly team meetings. It will also be addressed with the apprentice at tutorial with a tutor initially, with the tutor reporting back to the employer if appropriate.

Should the issue not be resolved from this tutorial, it will be flagged up to the Training Manager and the apprentice’s employer, which will trigger a meeting between the Training Manager, the apprentice and their employer, and another member of the tutor team if this is appropriate.

The purpose of the meeting will be to identify the issues which are contributing to the under- performance and to identify solutions, which may include putting in additional support arrangements.
