An interview with…Michael, Level 3 Veterinary Nursing Learner

What made you choose the apprenticeship route rather than the other options available?

I first started as a PCA working at Massey University in New Zealand. Through this, I picked up a lot of skills, techniques, and experiences and found that I am more of a practical learner. The other routes there weren’t as hands-on as an apprenticeship, which led me to choose an apprenticeship over different routes. I enjoyed learning directly from the vets and the RVNs, who helped me develop my skills and knowledge.

How would you compare the past courses you have taken to this one?

I have been out of education since I was 18. My last course was in art, design, and photography, so this is very different, but working with animals has always been what I have wanted to do. I just didn’t know where to begin back then.

What is the best thing about studying on an apprenticeship?

The best thing for me is being able to apply the knowledge I have learnt at college in practice.

Where did you hear about this apprenticeship?

I learned about the apprenticeship from the amazing Vicki Hale, who was our apprenticeship manager. She thought that me and a couple of my colleagues would be a good fit for the apprenticeship at Goddard’s.

Once you have attained your qualification, what area would you consider furthering your career in?

I would love to do an exotics course once I qualify, as I am fascinated with reptiles, and I would like to apply my skills and knowledge to the weird and wonderful creatures that aren’t routinely seen in practice. Eventually, I would like to work as a vet nurse in a zoo and possibly work with bats (sky puppies).
